A town planner sits somewhere between an architect, a scientist, a designer and an environmental consultant. They need to have a wide breadth of knowledge and take many different things into consideration when planning a town and regenerating a space, making it fulfil its potential. It is a difficult yet rewarding job that would suit someone who has a scientific mind.

Getting into town planning is usually best done via a university degree. If you already have a degree in something else, it may be possible to take an MA and gain the qualifications you need instead. Look through prospectuses and see what is available to you.

It may be possible to get into this area without a degree, though it will be more challenging. Look into government and local council jobs, and see if you can work your way up to a position within the environmental and planning departments.
