Can you Make Use of Suntubes? August 29, 2017

Natural light is really important for any building. It is important that you bring in as much light as possible, helping to make a pleasant home or working environment depending on the nature of the building. You may think there is no way you could bring light into certain places but this is a common misconception. The best way to use light in hard to reach places is with suntubes.

Suntubes are used to direct light from roof level into a space below. They are different to rooflights in that they are much smaller and can be fitted into virtually and roof space. This makes them ideal for helping to bring more light into areas like hallways, stairwells and landings. The light is directed down reflective tubing into the room and it may surprise you just how much difference this supposedly small amount of light can make – you will never regret installing suntubes.

Smoke Vents and Automatic Opening Vents July 17, 2017

Smoke vents and automatic opening vents (AOVs) are important facets of smoke safety systems. They should be installed in all commercial buildings where the fire regulations say that they are required. Often, they can be installed anyway to make a building even safer. They can all be linked together with the rest of the fire safety system in order to make sure all the different parts are working together to ensure the ultimate protection for people inside a building.

AOVs can be linked up to fire alarm systems and will open when they sound. They can be set to open in other situations as well, creating a way for smoke to exit a building. Smoke vents perform much the same function. AOVs might also be used for access to a roof area or another hard to reach part of the building, making it easier to get in and out.

Visiting UK Cities with Great Architecture March 12, 2017

You don’t have to be an architect to appreciate great architecture. A city that has some impressive buildings, whether old or new, can be a really enjoyable place to spend time and take some photographs. The good news is, you don’t actually have to leave the UK to see some really unique and interesting buildings. Here are some cities you can visit if you are looking for some impressive architecture:

  • London. The mix of old and new in this city makes it an incredibly interesting place to explore. The modern part of the city has many skyscrapers where you can enjoy a cocktail and a great view over London.
  • Glasgow. This city features lots of the work of the great architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The Glasgow School of Art is one of his great masterpieces.
  • Bristol. The old houses and flats in and around Clifton are beautiful and architecturally very interesting but the new parts of the city, like the shopping malls and entertainment centres, are also very impressive.

Purchasing Pipe Cutting Tools December 10, 2016

If you’re looking to upgrade your Pipe Cutting Machines, for reasons of safety, expansion of your business, or for those do it yourself jobs in the garage, there are tools out there that can help you save time and money. Most importantly, buying the right tool will minimise risk, and help you avoid industrial accidents around the home.

The most difficult route you can follow these days is the old style of hand grinding. This way is very outdated, difficult to do well every time, time-consuming, and results in a higher number of accidents due to the nature of how it operates. There is a loss of accuracy associated with the practice as well. I would urge you to reconsider this option, and instead, do further research into what is available.

What Makes a Good Building Design? November 30, 2016

Construction is booming and new buildings are being built all over the world. We would hope that most of these buildings would be solid and sturdy, but what really sets a building design apart? There are certain criteria that a well-designed building should always meet. By running through a few simple questions, you will be able to find out if the building is going to be a success well into the future.

  • Is it environmentally friendly? This is perhaps one of the most important questions to ask, as everyone is trying to reduce their carbon footprint. A building that is classed as eco-friendly will use as many renewable construction materials as possible and will have used low carbon construction processes.
  • Is it energy efficient? Eco-friendliness doesn’t end after construction. It needs to be possible to run the building without wasting resources and money. The building should be very well insulated and make use of natural light as much as possible. Look out for features like roof lights that will help reduce the need for artificial lighting.
  • Will it still look good in 10 years’ time? A truly modern building won’t age too quickly. Designs do of course go in and out of fashion, however, a good architect will be able to achieve something that looks timeless.
  • Does it provide everything required by the users? Facilities and indoor space should be completely usable and geared up to meet the needs of the building’s occupants. For example, an office building should have plenty of space to have flexible offices, conference facilities, a reception area, storage and anything else specified.

Measuring a building’s true success involves not just its users, but also anybody who lives and works in the local area. The most successfully designed buildings will have something to please everyone yet at the same time, will be completely suited to its intended purpose.
