The role of an architect is extremely varied. Put simply, an architect designs buildings of all shapes and sizes, both domestic and commercial. It is a difficult and demanding field which is also highly competitive. Therefore, architects needs to be highly capable in all aspects of their job. Here is a brief outline:

  1. First of all, an architect will need to research and plan out the type of building. They will need to consider how to make a building fit for purpose, which will inform its layout. Much of this will come from experience – over time, an architect will develop the ability to know instantly what a particular type of building is going to require. This will allow them to plan the overall layout and structure.
  2. Architects will need to consider health and safety at all times. They will have received extensive training in this. When designing a building, they will need to consider safety during the construction as well as the safety of the finished building.
  3. Architects will need to work with people and communicate effectively to be successful in their job. They will need to work with lots of different people, including important clients, so it’s essential that they can communicate their vision and act persuasively, almost as a sales person.
  4. Once research is complete, an architect will need to create drawings and CAD plans. This will help them to assist their clients in visualising the end product, but it will also act as a useful tool for them whilst they are planning.
