Natural light has many proven benefits. It helps to improve people’s moods, and it can aid concentration to make it easier for people to work. Therefore, it’s important that modern-day buildings make good use of light, and architects need to take this into consideration during the design process. There are plenty of ways in which this can be achieved:

  • Use large windows. Many modern buildings will even have entire walls made purely of glass. This will look dramatic from the inside and the outside, and it will ensure that plenty of light is able to penetrate.
  • Include conservatories or orangeries. This will provide a light and bright space for people to enjoy, and it will also benefit the other adjacent rooms, allowing more light to fill them too if using glass panes between the two spaces.
  • Use roof lights and skylights. These will provide extra natural daylight without the need for extra windows. Too many vertical windows can sometimes feel imposing, and the buildings’ users might feel quite exposed. Rooflights are an excellent way around this.
  • Fit sun tubes. Similar to roof lights, these clever designs will allow natural light to enter from above. However, they are incredibly unobtrusive and will only take up a very small amount of space. They can be fitted in awkward places where it’s difficult to get enough daylight.
